Bill to establish May as Canadian Jewish Heritage Month
On Tuesday, December 6, 2016, Senator Linda Frum tabled Bill S-232 to establish May as Canadian Jewish Heritage Month. MP Michael Levitt will sponsor the bill in the House of Commons after it passes the Senate.
The Centre for Israel Affairs (CIJA) applauded Senator Linda Frum and MP Michael Levitt’s initiative. David J. Cape, Chair of CIJA said:
“The creation of Canadian Jewish Heritage Month is particularly timely as Canadians prepare to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation.
“For generations, the Jewish community has been an integral part of Canada, making historic contributions to Canadian democracy, civil society, military service, business, academia, and arts and culture.
“We encourage all parliamentarians to recognize and celebrate Jewish contributions to Canada by supporting Bill S-232.”
BILL S-232 – An Act respecting Canadian Jewish Heritage Month
Whereas the Jewish population in Canada is approximately 400,000 people, making it the fourth-largest Jewish population in the world;
