Canadians to take part in new attempt to break Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza
Three Canadian women will be joining the Women’s Boat to Gaza campaign as it attempts to break Israel’s naval blockade of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. The boat, named “Amal-Hope”, is scheduled to set sail from Barcelona on September 14 in an attempt to breach the blockade which the anti-Israel activists claim is illegal, but which a United Nations independent report ruled is both “legal and appropriate”.
“Israel faces a real threat to its security from militant groups in Gaza,” the 2011 Palmer Report, led by former prime minister of New Zealand and aided by former Colombian president Álvaro Uribe along with one representative from Israel and another from Turkey, said in its opening paragraphs. “The naval blockade was imposed as a legitimate security measure in order to prevent weapons from entering Gaza by sea and its implementation complied with the requirements of international law.”
