‘Free Palestine’ banner removed from U of T Scarborough student centre
For the past few years, a pro-Palestinian banner has been prominently featured at a university student centre in Toronto, making many Jewish students feel targeted and ill at ease.
No, I’m not referring to the Palestinian Roots mural at York University (which, astonishingly, remains on display despite the chorus of voices demanding it be removed), but a “Free Palestine” banner at the University of Toronto, Scarborough campus.
To the pleasant surprise of Canadian students of conscience, however, the banner was nowhere to be seen at the student centre when they returned to campus this year, in part thanks to the advocacy of one of our own Hasbara Fellows, Gabriela Rosenblum.
Gabriela has written a brief op-ed about her experience, and how she helped the university’s Student Union realize why the banner was polarizing. Please read it in its entirety below.
We are incredibly proud of Gabriela’s achievement and wish her a Yasher Koach for all her hard work!!!
