Prime Minister Trudeau’s Liberal government has appointed one of Omar Khadr’s former lawyers as a judge of the Federal Court. He is also an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law. Based in Toronto, lawyer John Norris’s appointment was announced by Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould.

Norris and Brydie Bethell were lawyers for the convicted murderer and confessed terrorist, Omar Khadr from August 2011 until January 2013. They represented him in his legal battle against the government’s Ministry of Public Safety in 2011.This resulted in the former child soldier’s return to Canada. The criminal and national security lawyer has also indirectly been involved with cases involving Khadr in the past.

Expressing the views of many Canadians, Alaina Fraser commented on line, “After enraging Canadians by paying off terrorist Omar Khadr ten and a half million dollars, he goes one step farther to make Khadr’s lawyer a federal judge.”

Trudeau’s decision to “reintegrate” returning ISIS fighters also outraged many Canadians. Even public safety Minister, Ralph Goodale expressed doubts.
